When I moved to NYC in 1995 Geoffrey Beene was my neighbor! He (we) lived in a building on 69th between 1st and 2nd. The first floor of the building was all duplex apartments (I lived in one with 2 of my girlfriends - her dad owned the place) and Mr. Beene lived a few doors down. I used to see him in the window when I came home.
This was such a great read and such a trip down memory lane. These pieces are so extraordinary, but your stories about them remind me of why I got into design! Thanks for sharing!
Geoffrey Beene. ❤️🔥 I love how much you love fashion. Reading this brought back a lot of memories. Question: who are your favorite current designers?
marco zanini, and simone bellotti and colleen allen are all doing really cool things I think!
We are not worthy! 😭
Lol ! I am merely the collector 🪡
But without the stories and history behind each piece, these would be somewhat interesting pieces of clothing. You make each piece live!
❤️❤️
More more more, can I book a guided tour?
Thank you so much for this cultural history lesson! What artists need most are collectors who understand and cherish their work.
this was an amazing voyage thru fashion-time. Thank you for sharing.
So cool !!! I think I need to assign space for an archive now???
Lol and a baby!
Aaah love this so much! Beautiful clothes!!
The Barneys sale—OG “waiting in a big dumb line” as a form of peak NYC entertainment. (See SNL skit). And that zippered Beane dress 👀 💣
Hahaa!! I just watched that skit!
Love this! I would love so much to feature you in my Best Thing I Ever Thrifted series on my own Substack!
Love your article and I adore the Issac Mizrahi coat!!!
This is so great! Saving this to read again and again.
And now I'm never getting rid of the Helmut Lang bra/crop top with its weird shoulder strap that I bought in 2002ish.
I want / need to see that! It sounds so helmut/amazing
