Love! When I was at Conde we used to give our invites to the interns and assistants so they could use them to get in while we checked in saying we forgot our invites. Someone told me later that they photo copied those onto card stock so they could get in like 3 more friends. You have to be resourceful in fashion.
This would be a bestseller! Thank you for taking us back — Reminds me of when, prior to working at Calvin where I legit got into the shows, I tried to sneak into the tents (the Baby Phat show was the closest I got to).
I am writing a fashion essay collection that starts in the 90's. The great nostalgia coupled with tales of love, loss and finding my authentic self, is all told through what I wore. Such rich territory.
The shows in the 90s were the best! I was graduating college and working at NY1 in the political unit (30 years later, I’m still covering politics), but I’d always loved fashion and NY1 used to do tons of special coverage of the shows at Bryant Park (and beyond). Each season, I’d always beg and plead to weasel my way in. I remember those amazing Anna Sui shows, Betsy Johnson and her cartwheels. But two shows stand out: one was a Marc Jacobs show…I got to interview him backstage and what I remember most is that I was dressed like a total college kid freakshow (like not cool creative, just bad) and he could not have been kinder or more gracious, especially since I was a nervous wreck and clearly had no idea what I was talking about. It’s crazy how little acts of kindness from a stranger can stay with you your whole life. Be nice to people, people. It’s not hard.
The other incredible show was for milliner Philip Treacy. I’d never heard of him and was kind of bummed that this was the ticket I’d been stuck with. Good Lord was it amazing. Kate. Naomi. Those magical hats. Unreal. I even managed to get back stage before the show. My friend, Enez and I spotted Naomi getting makeup with a McDonalds bag on her lap. Enez summoned the nerve to inch over for a peek inside. She had to know. It was fries. All fries.
woooooowwww - sooooo amazing love these - we were just talking the other day at the office about how no one's fries beat Mcdonald's ! thank you for sharing!
Miss those 90s days, great pics! I was obsessed with the fashions and models and reading Vogue magazine, couldn’t wait for those fat ones in Sept and March. Reminds me of the Vogue doc on Hulu, was so nostalgic as well.
these NAMES! I haven't seen so many of them since the 90s. I remember them all, of course. Vogue was my Bible. What a blast from the past...talk about capturing an ERA!
Loved these photos and the stories behind them! And the Toronto/Canadian references! Had no idea you’re Canadian, too. Thanks for sharing these fun stories with us!
